In late June/early July of 2019, my husband Russell and I enjoyed a Scotch whisky tour with three other couples who are our friends (Alan and Gail Frazer, Anne Andrews and Paul Weiss, and David and Sue Morilak). One of my favorite locations that we visited, and a place I hope to return to, is the glorious scenic Isle of Skye off the west coast of Scotland. We stayed two nights at Viewfield House, a wonderful large Victorian-era traditional country house loaded with character that has been converted into and is run as a hotel by the descendants of the original family owners. The old Gaelic name for Viewfield, is Goirtean na Creige, which roughly translates as the “green meadow under the rock.” Viewfield House is set on 20 acres of woodland garden on the outskirts of Portree, which is the capital of Skye.

Viewfield House

This painting is based upon a photo that I took on the afternoon of our arrival at the hotel. I was struck by the peaceful beauty and tranquility of the setting, which is what I was striving to convey in this painting. The painting was completed on the four-year anniversary of my open heart surgery and it also celebrates my joy and gratitude at still being here in the world.
