Smiling Camels

The Smiling Camels and Their Bedouin Handler Enjoying Day’s End in Wadi Rum, Jordan

Painting #25 - October 30, 2020
acrylic on canvas 24"W x 18"H
gallery wrapped/painted on edges
$375.00

This is the second in a series of three camel-themed paintings from our family’s visit to Wadi Rum, Jordan in January 2020. Although it is not immediately obvious, there actually are four camels in this painting, but only three of their heads are showing. These four camels were ridden by the Golf family (my brother-in-law Ethan, his wife Brenda, their son Nathaniel and their daughter Gabrielle). Our niece Allison had ridden the camel depicted in Painting #24.

This scene especially appealed to me because of the way that two of the camels and their human handler are smiling, as though they are sharing an inside joke together. I also loved the beautiful warm glow that the setting sun gave to the waning light, which in turn enhanced all the brilliant red, orange, pink and gold colors in the rocks and sand.
