This painting was based on a photo taken inside a restaurant where our excursion group had lunch while visiting the Old Town area of Split, Croatia. This was during the wonderful Mediterranean cruise I took with my husband, his brother and wife in October 2017. The restaurant was located by the Diocletian Palace, built by the Romans for the Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century. The palace’s buildings and site are beautifully preserved and it is an impressive UNESCO World Heritage site, although probably today it is most popularly known for its presence in “Game of Thrones.” The scene attracted me because of the profusion of colorful flowering plants sitting on the windowsill as well as planted outside in the window box, the contrast between the darkness

inside the restaurant and the light shining through the window, the intense blue in the wooden shutters across the way, as well as the large stones inside and out giving a feeling of natural beauty and age. Also, I like scenes looking out of windows or doorways, not only for what is there at the time, but also for what might appear at any moment. Painting scenes from trips taken pre-Covid 19 brings back such lovely memories!
