In January 2020, my husband and I visited Israel and Jordan with his brother and family to celebrate our sister-in-law’s birthday. After a glorious day and night reveling in the natural scenic splendors of Wadi Rum, Jordan, we were driven to Petra.
On the way, our van stopped at a gift shop/rest stop perched along the roadside and strategically located by an overlook with a gorgeous view of the Jordanian desert below. It was bitterly cold outside with overcast dark skies, but still quite a lovely sight to behold. We jumped out of the van and took photos at the overlook before entering the gift shop, which was filled with all sorts of tempting exotic goodies.
We purchased beautiful pashminas and other types of scarves that the store clerks wrapped around our heads and we were especially grateful for that warmth when we reached Petra. We spent a wonderful day walking for miles while exploring this fantastical ancient city with its stunning buildings carved directly out of the rose-colored sandstone cliffs. As the day advanced, it became more and more obvious that a winter storm was brewing. Once we saw the outdoor stall vendors covering up their wares and closing up their shops, we hurried back to our van to escape the impending bad weather. It was completely dark by the time we reached the Israeli border, where we were told that it was now snowing in Petra.
