In January 2020, my husband and I visited Jordan along with the family of his brother Ethan to celebrate the birthday of Ethan’s wife Brenda. I was profoundly struck by the awe inspiring natural and man-made beauty of Petra as well as its fascinating history. This world renowned ancient archeological city in southern Jordan also is known as the Rose-Red City due to its stunning buildings and other structures that were directly carved onsite from the multi-colored sandstone cliffs. Petra (initially called Raqmu) was the capital of the Arab Nabataean Kingdom and was first established around the 2nd century BC. It later was annexed by the Roman Empire and occupied until a large earthquake destroyed much of it in the 4th century AD. As a result, it became a "lost" city

Petra

until it was rediscovered by a Swiss explorer in 1812. Petra is located adjacent to Wadi Musa (Valley of Moses), one of the places where, according to tradition, the Israelite leader Moses struck a rock and water gushed forth. Petra also happens to be famous for its water conduit system.

The area depicted here is not one of the famous locations in Petra, but I was drawn to this particular scene because of the deep and vibrant striated colors in the rock.
